Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Here's a step-by-step look at how the process works:
• Export Haulage: Goods are moved from the manufacturer's location to the freight forwarder's warehouse or the port/airport of origin.
• Export Customs Clearance: The freight forwarder or a customs broker handles the preparation and submission of all necessary paperwork to clear the goods for export from the country of origin.
• Origin Handling: The goods are unloaded, inspected for damage, and prepared for their journey. If the shipment is less than a full container or truckload, the freight forwarder may consolidate it with other shipments to optimize space and costs.
• Main Transportation: The goods are transported to their destination via the agreed-upon mode(s) of transport—air, sea, rail, or road. The freight forwarder tracks the shipment and keeps the client updated.
• Import Customs Clearance: Upon arrival in the destination country, the freight forwarder manages the customs clearance process, including preparing documentation and paying any duties and taxes on behalf of the client.
• Destination Handling: The goods are unloaded and prepared for the final leg of their journey.
• Import Haulage: The shipment is transported from the port/airport to its final destination, whether a warehouse or the end customer's location.
The primary types of freight transportation are:
• Air Freight: The fastest option, best suited for time-sensitive, high-value, or urgent shipments.• Sea Freight: The most economical choice for large-volume, bulky, or non-urgent international shipments.
• Land Freight: A highly flexible and reliable method for domestic and regional transport, often used for door-to-door delivery.
In addition to these, many logistics providers offer Multimodal Transport, which combines two or more of the above methods (e.g., sea and rail) to create a single, optimized solution for complex shipping needs.
• Freight Forwarder: Specializes in the transportation and coordination of goods, particularly for international shipments. Their core focus is on moving goods from point A to point B, handling tasks like carrier selection, customs clearance, and documentation. They act as an expert middleman for the shipping process itself.
• 3PL: Offers a broader, more comprehensive range of logistics services, often handling both domestic and international operations. A 3PL can manage an entire supply chain, which might include warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment (picking, packing, and shipping), and returns, in addition to transportation. They are a deeply integrated partner in a company's day-to-day operations.
In short, a freight forwarder is a specialist in transportation, while a 3PL is an end-to-end supply chain manager.
Freight forwarding can be categorized based on the mode of transport used:
• Air Freight Forwarding: The fastest option, ideal for time-sensitive, high-value, or perishable goods.
• Sea Freight Forwarding (Ocean Freight): The most cost-effective solution for large, bulky, or non-urgent shipments, typically involving container ships.
• Road Freight Forwarding: Involves moving goods by truck or van. It's highly flexible and commonly used for domestic or regional transport, as well as the initial and final legs of an international journey.
• Rail Freight Forwarding: An economical choice for transporting heavy or bulky cargo over long distances on land.
• Multimodal Freight Forwarding: Combines two or more modes of transport (e.g., sea and rail) under a single contract to optimize for cost and speed.
A freight forwarder's key services include:
• Arranging transportation via air, sea, rail, or road.
• Preparing and managing all necessary shipping and customs documentation.
• Handling customs clearance and duties.
• Negotiating freight rates and optimizing routes.
• Providing cargo insurance.
• Tracking and monitoring shipments.
• Consolidating smaller shipments into a single container to reduce costs.
